Jon Campbell Writing Series, #2: Sessions with The Elements of Style

For Writers Signed Up for June 15, 2023

Please click on the below link for the “Rules of Usage” prior to our session. We will also review the more accessible and humorful, “Elementary Principles of Composition.” On June 29, we will go over their “Approach to Style.”

E.B. White’s conclusion (from the Introduction of his and William Strunk’s seminal ‘little’ book, “The Elements of Style” (New York: MacMillian 1959):

“All through the Elements of Style one finds evidences of the reader’s deep sympathy for the reader. Will felt that the reader was in serious trouble most of the time, floundering in a swamp, and that it was the duty of anyone attempting to write English to drain this swamp quickly and get the reader up on dry ground, or at least throw a rope. […] I still find the Strunkian wisdom a comfort, the Strunkian humor a delight, and the Strunkian attitude toward right-and-wrong a blessing undisguised.”
